State of The Environment

Summary

A State of Environment (SOE) Report provides information about environmental and social conditions, trends and pressures for the country and the surrounding seas.

This SOE Report is a requirement of the Environmental Protection and Management Act, 2019 under Part X, Section 89. This first SOE Report was prepared under the “Monitoring and Assessment of Multilateral Environmental Agreements Implementation and Environmental Trends in Antigua and Barbuda” project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the Cross-Cutting Capacity Development (CCCD) focal area. The CCCD project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the Department of Environment (DOE).

The approach involved an extensive document review and stakeholder consultations. Using the DPSIR framework, the report analyses drivers and pressures, describes the current state and trends, assesses impacts, and outlines responses and actions taken to date.

The following subsections (in the full report) describe the summary of the main thematic areas in more detail, presenting the evidence base and suggested priority actions for protecting the environment and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
