National Adaptation Plan: Sectoral Adaptation Plan (SAP)
The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) will serve as a roadmap for showcasing how Antigua and Barbuda’s actual and potential efforts to adjust to climate change. It includes Sectoral Adaptation Plans (SAPs), specifically for the(i) Wholesale and Retail;(ii) Tourism;(iii) Infrastructure and Housing;(iv) Food Security;(v) Finance;(vi) Culture and Historical Sites; and(vii) Water. Also contributing to the NAP are Local Area Adaptation Plans (LAAPs), which were developed for the City of St. John’s; the Airport/Fitches Creek Area; and the Area from Jolly Harbour to Johnsons Point. Stakeholders played a crucial role in shaping these plans, making decisions on the strategies and interventions required to effectively address climate change impacts. The NAP and its associated SAPs and LAAPs collectively provide a holistic approach to climate change adaptation in Antigua and Barbuda, guiding decision-making processes and promoting the resilience of key sectors/ areas in the face of climate challenges.
Fire Suppression Equipment for EV Incidents Handed Over to Fire Department
Fire Service Receives Fire Blanket The Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph, Minister of Environment, has led efforts to enhance national emergency response capacity with the introduction of specialized fire suppression equipment for electric vehicle (EV) incidents. Through the Ministry of Environment, a set of fire blankets—large-scale, high-temperature resistant covers designed to immediately contain and suppress electric vehicle fires—has been formally handed over to the Antigua and Barbuda Fire Department. This marks the first time EV-specific safety equipment has been made available to the Fire Service in Antigua and Barbuda. The fire blankets were donated by SalvageWire, with the Ministry of Environment facilitating their transfer and integration into national emergency response systems. Prior to the start of hands-on training, the Sustainable Low-Emission Island Mobility (SLIM) Project facilitated a technical presentation for fire officers, providing critical guidance on the proper use, capabilities, and safety protocols associated with the fire blankets. Minister Joseph highlighted the importance of proactive planning, noting that as electric vehicles become more common, Antigua and Barbuda must be equipped with the tools and training necessary to respond effectively to new and evolving risks.This initiative reflects the Ministry’s continued commitment to climate resilience, innovation, and the protection of lives and property across Antigua and Barbuda, advancing the objectives of the Sustainable Low-Emission Island Mobility (SLIM) Project.

Solar Street Light Registration Public Notice: Call for Proposals-Solar Street-Light Program The Department of Environment through the Government ofAntigua and Barbuda will be facilitating the distribution of solar street lights provided with the support of the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The Department is inviting proposals from members of community groups, faith-based organizations, farmers, and private institutions of learning to participate in this initiative. Successful applicants will receive an 8000-lumen street-light, 8 metre pole and arm, solar panel, battery and battery box, Solar Panel washer, Solar Panel Bolt, Anchor Bolt Cage, Anchor Bolt, and Solar Panel Mounting Head. Please note that while the equipment will be provided, successful applicants will be responsible for covering the costs associated with the solar lights installation. Limited support for transportation will be available so please inquire. Hurricane Shutter Registration Opens for Pensioners and Low-Income Homes The Department of Environment is pleased to announce the registration process for hurricane shutters aimed at supporting pensioners and low-income households in strengthening their resilience ahead of the hurricane season. As part of this initiative, low-income homes will receive three (3) polycarbonate sheets free of charge, while additional sheets may be purchased at a subsidized cost of $62.50 per sheet, with a maximum of six (6) sheets per household. Registration will take place on the 13th and 20th September 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Department of Environment. The polycarbonate sheets measure 6.8’ x 8’ and are available in a variety of colours including Transparent, White, Blue, Grey, Yellow, Orange, Red, and Green. To register, applicants must present the following: – A valid Government-issued ID – A letter verifying Low-Income status from Cabinet, a Parliamentarian, Pastor, or Social Services – Pensioner’s Card (for retirees) – A copy of their electricity bill (printed or digital) – Window measurements (if cutting services are required) – Personal transportation to collect sheets The Department of Environment encourages all eligible pensioners and low-income households to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their hurricane preparedness.
