Fire Suppression Equipment for EV Incidents Handed Over to Fire Department
Fire Service Receives Fire Blanket The Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph, Minister of Environment, has led efforts to enhance national emergency response capacity with the introduction of specialized fire suppression equipment for electric vehicle (EV) incidents. Through the Ministry of Environment, a set of fire blankets—large-scale, high-temperature resistant covers designed to immediately contain and suppress electric vehicle fires—has been formally handed over to the Antigua and Barbuda Fire Department. This marks the first time EV-specific safety equipment has been made available to the Fire Service in Antigua and Barbuda. The fire blankets were donated by SalvageWire, with the Ministry of Environment facilitating their transfer and integration into national emergency response systems. Prior to the start of hands-on training, the Sustainable Low-Emission Island Mobility (SLIM) Project facilitated a technical presentation for fire officers, providing critical guidance on the proper use, capabilities, and safety protocols associated with the fire blankets. Minister Joseph highlighted the importance of proactive planning, noting that as electric vehicles become more common, Antigua and Barbuda must be equipped with the tools and training necessary to respond effectively to new and evolving risks.This initiative reflects the Ministry’s continued commitment to climate resilience, innovation, and the protection of lives and property across Antigua and Barbuda, advancing the objectives of the Sustainable Low-Emission Island Mobility (SLIM) Project.
Request for Proposal – Independent Expert Monitor
Background The Ethics and Audit Committee (EAC) of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board has identified integrity compliance gaps and recommended remedial measures in relation to IIU Case Nos. 22-022 and 22-030. In accordance with the EAC’s directive, the DoE is required to engage an independent expert monitor (“Monitor”) to oversee, assess, and provide evidence-based confirmation regarding the sufficiency and effectiveness of remedial actions undertaken by the Direct Entity (DoE). The Monitor’s work will support the IIU in determining compliance status for reporting to the EAC. Purpose and Objective The objective of this four (4) month engagement is to: Conduct an independent review of relevant governance and integrity systems; Monitor the DoE’s implementation of corrective measures; Provide evidence-based assessments to the IIU; Support confirmation of compliance with EAC recommendations. Terminal Review of the UNEP-GEF Project Summary This report is a Terminal Review of a UNEP/GEF Project implemented between 2019 and 2024. The Project’s primary objective was to promote mainstreaming of Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) into domestic systems and strengthen institutional capacity to enable routine, concurrent and participatory monitoring processes that enhance transparency under the Paris Agreement (PA). The review sought to assess project performance (in terms of relevance, effectiveness and efficiency), and determine outcomes and impacts (actual and potential) stemming from the Project, including their sustainability. The TR has two primary purposes: i) to provide evidence of results to meet accountability requirements, and ii) to promote operational improvement, learning and knowledge sharing through results and lessons learned among UNEP and main project partners. This evaluation supports the Department of Environment, and by extension the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, in enhancing the RLP under the SIRF Fund by assessing its implementation, identifying lessons learned, and providing recommendations. Solar Street Light Registration Public Notice: Call for Proposals-Solar Street-Light Program The Department of Environment through the Government ofAntigua and Barbuda will be facilitating the distribution of solar street lights provided with the support of the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The Department is inviting proposals from members of community groups, faith-based organizations, farmers, and private institutions of learning to participate in this initiative. Successful applicants will receive an 8000-lumen street-light, 8 metre pole and arm, solar panel, battery and battery box, Solar Panel washer, Solar Panel Bolt, Anchor Bolt Cage, Anchor Bolt, and Solar Panel Mounting Head. Please note that while the equipment will be provided, successful applicants will be responsible for covering the costs associated with the solar lights installation. The Impact of Installing an Engineered Water Management System on North Beach, Jolly Harbour The purpose of this Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is to comprehensively evaluate the potential environmental, social, and public health impacts associated with the proposed engineered water management infrastructure at North Beach, Jolly Harbour. This EIA aims to support the proposal to install the engineered water management system by assessing both the benefits and potential risks of the project, while also proposing strategies for sustainable implementation. Specifically, the EIA will: – Assess the current environmental conditions of the North Beach catchment area, including hydrology, ecology, and land use. – Identify and evaluate pollution sources and pathways, particularly those related to stormwater runoff, agricultural inputs, and unauthorized sewage effluent discharge. – Analyze the effectiveness and functionality of the proposed engineered damming system in mitigating water quality degradation and ecological stress. – Evaluate both short-term and long-term impacts on terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including biodiversity, habitat integrity, and water quality. – Identify any potential environmental or social risks, such as increased flooding, stagnation, or conflicts with existing land uses. – Recommend mitigation measures, design considerations, and best practices to guide the project’s environmentally responsible implementation.
